Spotting a Bed Bug Infestation

Red itchy bites - One telltale sign of a bed bug problem is finding a distinctive bite pattern on your skin when you wake up. If you see tiny, flat, red contusions in a zigzag pattern or in small clusters, you’ve been feasted on by bed bugs Blood spots and dark blotches on sheets - You will know these blotches are due to a bed bug infestation if you touch them and they smear or have an unpleasant odor.
Musty odor - Pheromones are released by bed bugs and especially when they are in a big population, you can smell an unpleasantly strong, musty odor that can be likened to that of a wet towel.
Bug Exoskeletons - In its entire lifetime, a bed bug sheds its skin at least five times. They also have exoskeletons and these shells that they molt are similar in sight to those of a live bed bug.

How To Prevent Bed Bug Infestion

Bed bugs are great adventurers. You can take them home from public establishments such as hotels, hospitals, restaurants or other residences. They latch on personal belongings such as luggage, clothing and furniture.

Tips when traveling

  • Avoid leaning luggage on walls, beds and carpet. You’re better off leaving your luggage on tile or cold surfaces.
  • Inspect for bed bugs or other insects before entering your home.
  • Wash and disinfect your shoes, clothes, suitcases used from traveling after using it.

Tips for your home

  • Always clean and inspect for bugs and insects before buying anything secondhand.
  • Look around your home and seal any cracks and crevices you can find. You can try looking at floor moldings, on edges of your cabinets, and plumbing fixtures.
  • Be weary of your guest’s belongings. Make sure the suitcases are bed bug free in case anybody pays you a visit and decides to stay long.
  • If you possibly encounter an already infested object, wash and dry it as soon as possible and seal it in a plastic bag.
